China executes new military drills around Taiwan

Despite previously announcing an end to live fire exercises on Sunday, China's military says it is not stopping on large scale military drills around Taiwan.

The Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese Army has disclosed it would practice sea raids and anti-submarine attacks.

China has been accused by Taiwan of using these drills as practice to invade the island as Beijing responded with exercises four days earlier as US House of Reps Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits the island.

Taiwan said on Monday that Chinese aircrafts and ships had not made any entry into their territorial waters, which extend from the coast 12 nautical miles (22km; 14 miles), during the exercises so far.

The United States as well as Japan and Australia have condemned the drills, saying their aim is to alter the state of things in the Taiwan Strait - the 180km-wide (110 miles) body of water between the mainland and the island.

China's capital Beijing views Taiwan as a breakaway province that it can claim by force, if required, however, Taiwan sees itself as an island that rules itself also believes it is distinct from China.

Washington has strongly criticized Beijing for breaking off cooperation with the US in several areas including climate change in retaliation for Nancy Pelosi's visit.

China gets furious at the slightest hint of recognition of Taiwan as a self-ruled island by leaders of the world.
