South Africa were already on course to record their first ever FIFA Women's World Cup win in the encounter, however, the Bayana Bayana had to settle for one point after the South Americans netted twice within five minutes in the second half.

Linda Motlhalo gave South Africa the lead in the 30th minute, and Thembi Kgatlana made it two in the 66th minute for manager Desiree Ellis' side.

A stunning goal in the 74th minute from Sophia Braun revived confidence in Argentina, and in the 79th minute, Substitute Romina Nunez levelled.

Argentina head coach, German Portanova, said: "I told them to play, have fun, dribble and play their best games. That's why we are here. They are wonderful players.

"I wanted to see them playing with that love that optimises our football. We were a bit slow in the first half. In the second half we changed and there was a huge feeling. We moved ahead with self-confidence.

"The thing I most admire about these players is the constant desire to grow. I'm really emotional about what they achieved."
