The Lord's Prayer: Part 3 - 'Lord teach us to pray...but deliver us from evil'

The Lord's Prayer according to Matthew 6:9-13 - "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."

The Seven (7) Petitions (cont. 4-7)

  1. Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread: Just as good and balanced food nourishes the physical body, the Good News or the word of God nourishes the spiritual body or the soul. Deuteronomy 8:3 - "And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live." We humbly ask through prayer for spiritual sustenance in this appeal. This will empower us so that we can move out into the world and preach His message through our words and actions.
  2. And Forgive Us Our Debts, As We Forgive Our Debtors: Wisdom is really needed here. This part of the Lord's Prayer might be the most difficult to practice as we pray it. While we pray for forgiveness of our sins, we should also reflect on the way we forgive those that sin against us. We have to exercise patience with ourselves as well as pray for the grace of God to be able to forgive truly. Forgiving someone who has sinned against us can be a tough thing to do sometimes, however, the Bible teaches that a good time to forgive is during prayer. Mark 11:25 - "And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses."
  3. And Lead Us Not Into Temptation: Temptation can make us sin against God and push us away from Him, and this is very dangerous. God will never lead us to sin; we commit sin all on our own due to the free will given to us by God. However, God is ever faithful and provide ways for us to overcome temptation. 1 Corinthians 10:13 - "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." In this appeal, we pray for God's guidance, and ask Him to grant us the ability to discern so as to enable us dodge temptation and sin.
  4. But Deliver Us From Evil: This petition/appeal covers the several times we fall prey to sin and temptation. We pray for God to watch over us and guide us away from evil; and all our fears. We pray for God to deliver us from the grip/claws/jaws of evil. We pray that God will protect us from all forms of evil even in the future. Psalm 34:4 - "I sought the Lord , and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears."

Through the Lord's Prayer, we humbly ask God for his guidance; and the spirit of discernment to help us steer clear of temptation and sin.

When we don't know what to pray or when no word comes to mind when we want to pray, the Lord's Prayer is really handy as it contains all our petitions.
